Moving from Temporary Resident (TR) status — a study or work permit — to Permanent Residency (PR) is one of the most common paths our clients take. The process itself isn't complicated once you know what's actually required, but missing or inconsistent documents are one of the most frequent causes of delay. Here's a general checklist of the document categories most PR applications will touch, laid out step by step.

1. Identity & Status Documents

• Valid passport (and any previous passports showing travel/immigration history).
• Current study or work permit, and copies of all past permits held in Canada.
• Proof of continuous legal status since arriving in Canada.

2. Education & Language

• Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for degrees/diplomas earned outside Canada.
• Canadian diploma or degree, if applicable (transcripts and confirmation of completion).
• Valid language test results — IELTS, CELPIP, TEF Canada, or TCF Canada.

3. Work Experience

• Detailed reference letters from every employer (duties, hours, salary, dates) matching the correct NOC code.
• Pay stubs, T4 slips, or Notices of Assessment for Canadian work experience.
• Employment contracts or offer letters where relevant to your pathway.

4. Personal & Supporting Documents

• Birth certificate and, if applicable, marriage certificate.
• Police clearance certificates from every country lived in for 6+ months since age 18.
• Upfront medical exam results from a panel physician.
• Proof of funds (for streams that require it) and digital photos meeting IRCC specifications.

A Few Things That Commonly Trip Applicants Up

Reference letters that don't clearly describe job duties, gaps in status history that aren't explained, and language results that have expired before submission are three of the most common reasons a file gets held up.
